David Jackson solo

David Jackson – (Guastalla Live) Intro + Hallo
David Jackson – Guastalla: Live Tonewall & Soundbeam [2002]
A November night in Guastalla for an Event organised by the Peter Hammill / Van der Graaf Generator Study Group: the solo concert by David Jackson, once saxophone player in Van der Graaf Generator. A late afternoon arrival, the discovery of the musician during the soundcheck, a dinner with friends – and then, Music. Just minutes before the show we discover there are two video cameras available, and we attempt the unthinkable: a document which doesn’t fall in the category of the usual and boring bootleg captured from a hidden corner, with noises and tremblings included. To decide what to do and how we only have 15 minutes: not exactly the necessary time to invent a project. But this picture doesn’t take David into account: alone, he takes the stage like a giant for two exhausting hours of music, passion, smiles, tragedy. After a couple of weeks, in the silence of Sonica Studios, we make the point on the images with Emilio Maestri and we realise that maybe it can happen. So fifty hours of editing, syncing, experiments and second thoughts follow, in the search for the cuts able to render the atmosphere and emotion of the event at best. David sees the result at the right time and is quite impressed: to the point that he immediately asks us to release it.” Includes a couple of VDGG tracks, donchaknow!

The Endless Scream

WORDS AND ACTIONS: ALAIN O’CAIN
DAVID JACKSON: SAXOPHONES, FLUTES AND MACHINES

A collaboration with the artist Alain O’Cain, “The Endless Scream” is a roller coaster performance piece exploring the life and art of Norwegian artist Edvard Munch. A sell-out world premiere was given at the Burton Taylor Studio, Oxford on 18 January 2020: David used his unparalleled knowledge of soundbeam technolgies to create looped soundscapes as a backdrop to improvised saxophone/flute and spoken word/original poetry. We were joined in Oxford by Richard Leigh Harris (keyboard), George Haslam (reeds) and Steve Kershaw (double bass). “The Endless Scream” is set to visit new venues in ever-evolving formats in the coming years/months.

Unsere Zeit

“Unsere Zeit band is such a great idea and such relevant name for that time – and especially for our time right now. I had always been a fan of German psychedelic rock and was so disappointed that in spite of several great German Tours with Van der Graaf Generator and Charisma Bands in the 1970s, I had never come across ‘Unsere Zeit Band’. Finding out that they wanted to remake their song, ‘Ende vom Anfang’ – ‘End of the Beginning’ apparently inspired by ‘After the Flood’, it was clearly my ‘important duty’ to join the band for this important session. Anyway, Manfred and the wonderful film maker Ulli (Ulrich Haufe) seem to be delighted with my playing and recording so it is now a reality! It is a great song and I am very happy to recommend that you listen and watch – and please spread the important message and story!”
